This year has seen a flurry of activity by wharf99, culminating in the release of
the “Pulse E.P”: http://wharf99.bandcamp.com/album/pulse-ep
This 4-track E.P (plus a 5th bonus “hidden” track with the full download)
features remixes and edits of the track “Pulse” to be included on the album,
“The Shapes Of Synths To Come”, scheduled for an early 2012 release in
conjunction with Year Zero Records. The E.P. also includes an exclusive B-side,
“Dark Wave (Dubcycle Drum Mix)” which was long-listed for the recent
Beep Filtered competition on SoundCloud.
Earlier in the year, ABC Radio National’s “Sound Quality”
(http://www.abc.net.au/rn/soundquality) featured the single, “36 Years”, which
represented something of a shift in style by this independent artist who has
previously dabbled in ambient, soundtrack, indie and electronic sounds and
textures.
Based in Melbourne, wharf99 has been assembling self-produced home
recordings for the past few years, taking advantage of the benefits of DAW
software and the deluge of mobile phone apps that make it so much more
convenient to be a DIY musician. Like the forthcoming album, the “Pulse EP”
features music created, recorded and processed in various iPhone apps, such
as NLog MIDI Synth, ShapeSynth, Argon, Nano Studio, Funkbox, Hokusai,
SunrizerXS, etc.

"Based in Melbourne, wharf99 has been assembling self-produced home recordings for the past few years, taking advantage of the benefits of DAW software and the deluge of mobile phone apps that make it so much more convenient to be a DIY musician. The latest release, “36 Years” was triggered by playing around with the Kinetic iPhone app that by chance happened to capture a snippet of a radio documentary on Vietnam. This was then processed to become part of the source material for a heavy-duty sound-clash workout, complete with subterranean subsonic dub version on the b-side. Meanwhile, wharf99 has recently been messing around with analog-style apps like Filtatron and ShapeSynth, the early results reflected in Analog Demo #1"

Its the new ep from Scouts Of Uzbekistan, more of the usual avant garage rock from your very own fun lovin' muslims.
Don't think for a second this music is NOT very dangerous. I've seen the effects on test people in labs. Part of my eyes doesn't work so good any more now because of seeing that. Daleks came and shouted at us, grown ups in animal suits slobbered and yodelled for our delight on weekends. The Huntley and Palmer fruit lozenge bonging noise from the cold place, near the beginning, is a sneaking hunt trumpet tantivvy to the rugose cones that that nice Mr Howard warned us of. No one twigs. Not once. And so they gain stronger in strength everyday sitting out in the jungle while you get softer waiting for your orders. If you had ever listen to Pink & Perky, the way I know some do, and then learned everything you could about the creeping cat black magic that Les Gray used to make his tiger feet so neat, then you'll have some idea what magnitude of proportion we are actually dealing with. You gruffing doshers.

Daaark ambient electronic dreamscapes, with a smattering of bells and singing bowls. Thee Aethyr is the ambient arm of Thee Mark Chapman Experience, displaying a more hypnotic and mystical quality therein;like a scrambled underwater radio broadcast from the ancient edges of the observable universe,- thats twelve billion light years to the under informed out there. Highly recommended download for those wracked by anxiety, or just too stressed to cope with anything abrasive.All this without being wishy washy or "new age" (yuk!). Ambient for people with a foot in reality.
Think Cluster,Kluster,Popol Vuh and Eno, as points of reference.

Thee Mark Chapman Experience - " Housewives Sold Ice As Chicken " (year 004)

Experimental Post Ambient Quasi-Industrial Noise Rock.......just made that up, but it applies as an adequate genre for the music of Thee Mark Chapman Experience. The name is not an attempt to glorify murder, but a symbolic reference to the end of an old musical order, so calm ye down Beatles Saddo's everywhere (Although we are all Yoko Ono fans here).
The album starts with "Absolute Zero" , where the listener is plunged headfirst into ear splitting seering noise, be not afraid for the whole album is NOT like this."Exit Via Entrance" is a doom laiden peon to life, a dull distant thud as a countdown to an inevitable demise.The situationist sounding "Ne Travaillez Jamais!", is an improvised post jazz collaboration with Phil of Flipart,who contributes drums and clarinet."We Will Fight" samples Reverend Jim Jones's final call to arms speech against a teutonic funk backing.......I'm not gonna go through every track, but i think you get the general idea,its varied and experimental,and can get extreme listening, especially "Red Shift/Blue Shift", which sounds like a thousand guitar drone galactic rollercoaster, ascending and then descending in a light speed simulator.

With some tracks verging on the dark ambient, this is one of Phil's more accessable albums, but it is still earie and sinister, improvised and uber experimental....as always. Courthey Pine this is NOT!

Bizarre dark Drum'n'Bass stylings with a splash of Black Humour here from Nick Allison of Thee Aethyr, from back in the days of 1997. Still sounds remarkably fresh, maybe because it isn't yer bogg standard Drum'n'Bass format. Fused with Electronica,with a dash of Exotica,found sounds,noise samples, crossed with a drop of only the best in Elevator Muzak. Nick doesn't like to "Ghetto-ise" himself, hence the name Thee Outside.You could even dance to this if you were so inclined and on drugs.Probably the most commercial record on Year Zero!
Think Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin , Squarepusher and U-Ziq as musical references.

Scouts Of Uzbekistan - " Fun Lovin' Muslims " (Year 001)

Scouts of Uzbekistan are the core members of Mark Carolan and Nick d'Uzbekistan(both from Leicester,UK), plus a floating co-operative of members too numerous to list here. Mark, formerly occupied the drum stools of Pete Bassman's post spaceman 3 outfit, Alphastone and other Rugby(uk) scensters Uberfuzz, and here flexes more of his musical muscles than was exhibited in previous groups. Nick is a sculptor (for website click here) working under the moniker,- Planet Dork, and has been an underground musician for many years, beginning during the D.I.Y. cassette culture scene of the early 80's (see his Blog on said scene here).
The music contained within the digital data stored on "Fun Lovin' Muslims" is minimal avant rock, with a strong rythmical presence of the excellent drumming of Mr Carolan.Starting with a tribute to the father of dischord,by a version of Rhys Chatham's "Guitar Trio" ,the album was mostly recorded live and improvised. Tonal textures are provided by samples of distorted noise bursts, bizarre dialogue recordings and textural lead and bass guitars.There is even the appearence of melancholic melodies in between the guitar driven soundscapes. Something for all the family, although you'd have to be a pretty bizarre family.
Use This Heat, 23 Skidoo, and Can as a point of reference.
